Before You Go Anywhere

Check with your doctor and/or physical therapist before taking any trips. Let them know where you are going, how you are going, and for how long. They may be able to give you some extra tips about pain management. Depending on how long you will be gone, you may need extra medication or support devices. Pay attention to all their recommendations for a safe trip.

If You Are Flying

Making your way through a busy airport, security, and sitting in a cramped seat can be a pain. Don’t get discouraged! Think of where you are going, what loved ones you will connect with, and the freedom and enjoyment you will get from a change of environment.

Here are some non-negotiables when flying with chronic pain:

  • Buy your ticket early so you can choose the seat you want. Find those with extra legroom and close to the front of the plane. Buy the best seat you can afford.
  • Take your time packing. Think through your day and what you will need.
  • Keep all your medications with you in a lightweight carry on bag. Check anything heavier and be sure it is on wheels.
  • Bring a neck pillow to support your neck and back.
  • Plan ahead for a wheelchair and assistance to the gate.
  • Wear the most comfortable and supportive shoes you own.
  • Move around during the flight to stretch and work your muscles.

Traveling By Train

Most of the above tips hold here. Traveling by train can be a bit more comfortable and relaxing compared to flying. You can purchase a private room with beds and a restroom to give you not only more privacy, but also more comfort.

Traveling By Car

If you are not going too far away, an automobile trip can be relaxing.

Take breaks every hour or so. Change drivers if possible.

Walk around when you stop, stay hydrated, and stay safe by only using official rest stops.
